Four years after my first try, I registered at the bookcrossing website again today. I didn't have much luck with people reporting back afterreleasi8ng a book into the wild back then. I can see that Germany has gotten quite active in the meantime (6,400 released books in 30 days compared with the USA's 8,000 seems to imply we are actually more active over here :)).

Anyway, how was your experience with releasing books into the wild so far?

Pretty bad. The amount of books that get caught are minimal. I keep leaving my books allover the plcae, but they almost enver get caught. I am not trying very hard to improve the catch rate though.
I leave books with freinds a lot and also use bookmooch quite often. So I use controlled releases more than wild ones. I'm in Germany as well, by the way...

I generally have the feeling well labeled books are easier journalled. When back in Germany, I left quite some books in Buxtehude and a couple of them were caught by one (new, I think) bookcrosser who went hunting my later releases, too. I had another caught by a mum with her daughter, too.
On the other hand, I had picked up one of the released book at a lawn some meters from the bench I released it on... probably someone picked it up only to throw it away a couple of steps further... but that does happen.
Controlled released outside of already bookcrossing friends is... not working. Usually no JEs or similar.
